Conference Workshop

What does equity mean to you? How do we practice it in the workplace or within a project? As Isabel Blanco once asked: “How can we bear the discomfort to get to where we need to be?”

I designed the “Equity is..” card game as one way to explore these conversation in a structured way.

The cards serve as a starting point on a team’s journey towards recognizing the historical context of power, privilege, discrimination, and trauma that people’s realities are shaped by. Doing this at the beginning of projects or within team formation, enables us to design and develop products and tools that bake equity into the DNA of a project rather than add it on the end as an afterthought.

Workshop at the Code for America Conference

The “Equity is..” cards were first tested at the Code for America conference this year, where my team and I facilitated a workshop using the cards as a tool for discussion. We solicited feedback from participants and iterated on the cards so that they may be used in a variety of contexts.
